A Chick Does Tropical Garden

This wacky Houston weather -- and YES, stuff is still blooming!

My plants don't know what to do:  bloom or die.

We've been going from freezing temps to temps in the70's and I think our weather needs to be on lithium.

This is an angel trumpet, trying to bloom.  As you can see, the leaves were injured in the last freeze, but it looks like this little guy will still make it.

Here is a pretty little pink rose that is still blooming away!  I took a cutting of this off of a rogue plant along the bayou and it didn't bloom in the summer but is coming out now.  My winter rose!

Instead of dying, my Bird of Paradise plants are still going gangbusters, as you can see here with the backdrop of the tarp I use to cover my plants during a freeze.

I also move the bromeliads I have in the yard under the tarp.  I keep them in pots and set them in the garden so they are easy to move in time for a freeze.

I just bought me some Asian blue "bench" pots (I don't really know what they are called) today with a gift certificate and Bull Frog Bucks from Nelson Water Gardens.  Love that place!  Makes the yard look even better during the winter months and adds a bit of color. I also got the rock fountain there earlier this year.

I decided that instead of removing my tarps completely from the hooks and reattaching the on nights that we are supposed to have temps below freezing, that we would just tie them up and let them stay there until spring arrives.  Next year, I think I will replace the blue tarps with something less loud and boisterous.  Maybe I'll find some pretty white ones somewhere.

They say that a true blue is the hardest color to get in the garden - so keep the tarps. I am so glad they are working out for you.
